Chicago Physicians Choose DocBookMD to Enhance Patient Care
Austin, Texas, March 22, 2012
When it comes to medicine, it’s all about time. Chicago physicians now have the ability to communicate instantaneously and securely with other doctors by using DocBookMD, a HIPAA-compliant smartphone application.
A recent study found that 56 percent of doctors who use mobile devices say it expedites decision-making, according to a recent study by Float Mobile Learning. In addition, 40 percent say it also decreases time spent on administration.
“DocBookMD ensures continuity of care for patients,” said Dr. Tim Gueramy, an orthopedic surgeon and co-founder of DocBookMD. “DocBookMD makes it easy to refer and stay in touch with specialists so coordinating patient care is seamless.”
Physicians in more than 23 states are currently using DocBookMD to view EKGs from their mobile device to determine whether heart catheterization is urgently needed or if they can prevent unnecessary scheduling of procedures; review X-rays to decide the best course of treatment for a patient in the ER; and show maps and photos of consulting physicians to patients in order to better prepare them for next steps.
By using DocBookMD, physicians no longer have to risk a HIPAA violation if they text using their regular smartphone. Since 2011, physicians who send individually identifiable health information via a text were in violation of HIPAA regulations, a felony offense. Penalties include fines of up to $50,000 or up to one year in jail or both.
DocBookMD is currently available free to physicians who are members of the Chicago Medical Society. The smartphone app is available for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android phones. To download the application, visit the App store on your smartphone. In addition to text messages and photos, DocbookMD also allows physicians to:
- assign an urgency setting to outgoing text messages and confirm receipt
- search a local pharmacy directory
- search a local medical society directory to locate other doctors by name or by specialty
DocBookMD is an exclusive HIPAA compliant smartphone platform designed by and for physicians, creating secure networks for physicians to share patient information and collaborate with their medical colleagues. DocBookMD is offered through county and state medical societies to their members and is currently available throughout 23 states.
